What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is government funding provided to schools to help address the impact of social disadvantage and improve educational outcomes for eligible pupils. It is paid in addition to the school's main funding and is allocated based on the number of pupils eligible for Benefits Related Free School Meals. Schools also receive additional funding for children from service families and for pupils who have been adopted from care or who have been in local authority care for six months or more.

How is it calculated?

Although all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals, this does not qualify schools for Pupil Premium funding. Families who meet the eligibility criteria due to lower income, still need to register for free school meals. If they do not, schools miss out on this additional funding.

Think you may be eligible?

If you receive certain benefits, your child may qualify for benefits-related free school meals. Registering is quick and easy and, even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and already receives Universal Infant Free School Meals, registering helps to secure additional funding for school. This funding helps provide extra resources, support and opportunities for all of our pupils.

How is it used?

Every school can decide how to use its Pupil Premium funding because each school knows its pupils and their individual needs best. At Broadwater Down, we use this funding to provide additional support, resources and opportunities that help all children to flourish, both academically and personally.

The funding may be used to provide targeted teaching, pastoral support, enrichment activities, wellbeing initiatives or other interventions that help children overcome barriers to learning. We carefully monitor the impact of the support we provide to ensure that the funding is making a positive difference.

Our aim is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances, and to help close any gaps in achievement so that all pupils can succeed. You can view the ways we have used this funding below.
