    Girls Football Tournament

    9 March 2022 (by Mrs Harris (bdps-admin))

This week’s sports event saw us take a slightly longer trip to Hayesbrook for the 5/6 Girls’ football tournament. The weather was lovely, in fact it was almost warm, as we kicked off – a little nervously – our first game of four. The girls soon grew into the game and Lacey scored an excellent goal to give us a 1-0 victory. So far, so good. In game 2 we battled hard against a strong St. John’s side who scored a few excellent goals, but we never gave up and ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 loss that was closer than the score line suggests. Needing to win our third match against St James’ in order to stay alive in the tournament the girls attacked from the off and were rewarded with a fine goal from a Year 4 (playing, with another too, 2 years above their age) who nut-megged the goalkeeper. So, another 1-0 win meant we went into our final group game with a chance of making finals day. Our final game was against a well-drilled Bishop’s Down side but an early goal from one child had Mr. Neill dreaming. The girls continued to dominate possession but were unlucky to concede two goals in the last two minutes. So, two wins and two losses but an unbelievable effort from a group of girls playing their first tournament and games together as a girl’s squad. The Year 4’s were excellent in playing two years up, the Year 6‘s were excellent in defence with one also grabbing a goal. A special mention must go to the goalkeeper who didn’t have too much to do, but made some brilliant and important saves. Mr. Neill was incredibly proud of all of the players, who represented the school exceptionally, played well and above all, had fun.
