Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is an allocation of funding from the government used to address systemic social inequalities.

The Pupil Premium is funding provided to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on-roll who are eligible due to low family income (previously known as pupils eligible for ‘Free School Meals’), a smaller amount allocated according to the number of children of service families, and an allocation for each pupil who has been in care for 6 months or more, or who has been adopted from care. In 2012, funding was extended to include pupils who have been eligible within the past 6 years.

Because of the changes to Free School Meals in Years R to 2, it is really important that parents access this funding by applying on-line. Support with this can be provided by the school, on request.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. However, schools are held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils.  The purpose of the funding is to provide schools with the resources needed to narrow the gap between underachieving pupils and their peers.
